For more than thirty years, Civil Radio has been one of the defining media platforms and communities of independent and free radio in Hungary and beyond.
As an independent, community radio station, we have amplified the voices that are rarely heard: those of local communities, civil society actors, creators, activists, and engaged, critical thinkers. Over three decades, we have implemented countless radio programmes, trainings, community and educational initiatives, working in both national and international partnerships.
Civil Radio does more than produce radio shows. We build communities, share knowledge, and support young people and civil society actors in learning how to speak up, ask questions, listen carefully, and participate responsibly in the public sphere. We have always believed that democracy does not function on its own — it must be nurtured and strengthened every day.
Today, however, we are facing a difficult situation.
While we have many plans for 2026, the resources necessary to sustain our daily operations have nearly disappeared. The continued existence of Civil Radio — and the realisation of the programmes outlined above — can no longer be taken for granted.
We have clear and concrete plans for the year ahead.
We aim to continue and further develop the work that has made Civil Radio what it is today, including:
- producing regular radio programmes and podcasts focusing on civil society, social issues and public affairs;
- organising democracy-building and awareness-raising workshops for young people, with a focus on public speaking, critical thinking and media literacy;
- creating radio plays and creative audio content that address social issues in accessible and engaging formats;
- building and mentoring a network of local correspondents and community contributors, strengthening rural public discourse and bringing local issues into national visibility;
- providing trainings and workshops for civil society organisations and local communities, enabling them to represent their interests and achieve local goals through public communication.
This is why we are now openly asking for support.
We need financial and professional support to continue the work we have been doing for more than thirty years: maintaining and developing a free, community-based public sphere. Whether through individual donations, organisational support or professional cooperation — every contribution matters.
If independent, community-based media and a vibrant, diverse public sphere are important to you, we especially count on your support now!
